Ohio Governor Wants An End To Prop Betting

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine wants to end prop betting, requesting the state’s gaming control commission to remove prop bets from the list of legal bets. The decision from the Governor comes after Cleveland Guardians pitchers Luis Ortiz and Emmanuel Clase were put on paid leave as part of an investigation into gambling infractions.

DeWine stated, “The evidence that prop betting is harming athletics in Ohio is reaching critical mass. First, there were threats on Ohio athletes, and now two high-profile Ohio professional athletes have been suspended by Major League Baseball as part of a ‘sports betting investigation’.”

The two pitchers have been accused of influencing prop bets.

There has been no comment from the Ohio Casino Control Commission on whether it will ban prop bets as requested by the Governor.

Michigan Kicks Out Online Casinos

Michigan’s gaming control board sent out six cease-and-desist letters to online gambling platforms. The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) called the sites “illegal gambling operations” that were “violating Michigan laws”.

iGaming has been legal in Michigan since 2019, thanks to the Lawful Internet Gaming Act.

The six sites in question were:

  • Crypto Slots
  • NitroBetting
  • NewVegas
  • Las Vegas USA Casino
  • Grand Rush Casino
  • Slotgard Casino

Operating an online gaming platform without a license can result in a $100,000 fine and 10 years in jail.

Georgia Studying Sports Betting

Sports betting is back on the menu in Georgia. The House Study Committee on Gaming met for the first time to discuss the next steps towards legalization.

Georgia has come close to legalizing sports gambling several times. In 2025, legislation to send a constitutional amendment to Georgians failed to even come to a vote. That effort was the seventh time Georgia’s lawmakers had attempted to legalize sports gambling in the Peach State.

The hope for this study committee is that any roadblocks are ironed out before legislation is tabled and voted on.

What to watch for: The study committee will continue to meet until December 1, 2025, when it will file its official report.

Massachusetts Fines DraftKings For Credit Card Bets

Massachusetts-based giant DraftKings was fined $450,000 for allowing 218 customers to fund their accounts and place wagers using credit cards. The use of credit cards to fund accounts is banned in Massachusetts.

The issue was self-reported by DraftKings after customers with out-of-state cards had funded their accounts and placed bets with said funds. The error that allowed those out-of-state cards to fund accounts has been fixed, according to DraftKings.

New Jersey Assemblyman Tables Anti-Micro Betting Bill

New Jersey Assemblyman Dan Hutchinson tabled bill A5971 to ban micro-betting in the Garden State. Hutchinson believes that micro-betting is designed to prey on players’ impulses and keep them gambling:

“The pace of micro betting is designed to keep people gambling constantly, making one impulsive bet after another with little time to think.”

Micro-betting allows players to wager on a specific event in a game. Such as a specific pitch in any given MLB game. Read our micro-betting guide for more information.

Rhode Island’s iGaming Revenue Glow Up

Brick-and-mortar casino revenues in Rhode Island have fallen 1% YoY in June. Meanwhile, online gambling revenues have grown by 109.4% in the same period. Online table gaming revenues have doubled YoY to $1.2 million, while online slots revenues nearly doubled YoY from $1.8 million to $3.7 million.

Surely, terrestrial casinos will take this development as a “told you so moment”, but in May, brick-and-mortar revenues rose by 5.6% YoY while iGaming revenues rose 113% YoY. Both traditional and online gaming can grow simultaneously.

Anti-iGaming Sentiment Grows In New Mexico

The Pueblo of Laguna native american tribe has joined the National Association Against iGaming to stop iGaming from becoming legal in New Mexico.

The tribe believes iGaming poses a threat to not only tribal gaming rights but tribal economic development: “We are joining NAAiG to make it clear that the voices and sovereign rights of tribal nations must not be ignored as the future of tribal gaming is shaped in this country. iGaming poses a threat to more than just our revenue. It threatens the very foundation of tribal economic development that empowers our communities.”

As we just saw with Rhode Island, traditional casino gaming and iGaming can co-exist and thrive at the same time.
