Who Owns Casino Nova Scotia Now?

Casino Nova Scotia is owned by the Government of Nova Scotia through the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation (NSGC), while Great Canadian Entertainment runs the casino day to day under a long-term contract. The people of Nova Scotia are the ultimate owners, since the provincial government acts as the shareholder for all gaming operations in the province. This setup means the public controls the asset, while an experienced private company handles the actual gambling floor operations, customer service, and staff management.

Great Canadian Entertainment, which changed its name from Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, has operated Casino Nova Scotia since May 31, 2005, when it bought the property from Caesar’s for the first time. The company now runs both the Halifax location and the Sydney location, employing about 1,200 staff members across the two sites according to the NSGC’s 2023–24 annual report. For example, the Halifax casino has over 1,000 slot machines and 35 table games, while the Sydney location offers around 400 slots and 12 table games, giving Nova Scotians plenty of options whether they live on the coast or in the north shore.

In January 2026, NSGC and Great Canadian Entertainment announced a major update: a new casino will open in Dartmouth by 2029 at the Dartmouth Crossing shopping area. The contract gives NSGC the right to buy the current Halifax property once the new building opens, and the province plans to sell that older building to a private buyer. Great Canadian will stay on as the operator, with a lease-back deal that lets them keep running the Halifax casino while the new Dartmouth facility gets built, so there will be no interruption to service for customers over the next 3 years.

This ownership model has stayed the same for over 20 years, since the government never sold the casino itself and only hired a private partner to manage it. The Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation continues to oversee licensing, make sure rules get followed, and send profits back to the provincial budget. For Nova Scotians, this means the casino stays a public asset that generates revenue for schools, hospitals, and other services, while visitors and locals still get the professional service and modern gaming experience that Great Canadian brings to the table.
